Tips & Trending: Let's Talk Strobing

What is all the hype about strobing?

You're probably thinking to yourself ... great I just mastered highlighting and contouring and now the hype is "Strobing"! What do I do now?

Don't worry, if you've mastered contouring this will be a breeze for you. When I learned about strobing,  I realized it was my version of "lazy contouring". Sometimes when you want a little glamour but you don't have enough time to complete the look, I would use a lazy contour which in the end looks more like the strobing effect (who knew, I could have been a trend setter!)

So what is the strobing effect?
Strobing is basically heavy highlighting. Sounds easy right? The trick to get the right effect is to use the right product, and making sure you are applying it on the right areas of your face.

What products work best for highlighting?
Choosing the right product to use is really the hardest part. There are 3 types of highlighters you can choose:

  • Liquid highlighters that are really liquid-y give a beautiful natural glow to the skin. My favorite is the Mary Kay Facial Highlighting Pen. It's supersheer formula helps to keep my face looking refreshed and natural all day. I love the fact that it's a liquid in stick form for better application and you can carry it with you in your purse for re-application if you need a little under eye lift.
  • Cream - cream highlighters usually come in convenient stick packaging that gives you a lot of control over the application. Cream highlighters also give a natural glow and really work nicely for creating the strobing effect.
  • Powder - is always a popular choice. Powder highlighters come in every different shade and texture you can imagine. A finely-milled powder highlighter will work best for strobing; it's really the texture you want for all your brightening needs. The finer the texture, the more natural the glow.

How do I apply highlighter for the strobing effect?

As with any technique there's a few ways you can do it depending on how strobe-like or bright you want to be. If you want a light effect apply to the basic highlighting spots - brow bone, top of your cheek bones, tip of your nose, and a little on the chin. What makes it strobing is that you leave out the contour bit.

For an all out glamour effect, apply to the basic highlighting spots and also: right above the jawline (leaving the hollows of your cheeks un-highlighted), bridge of the nose, temples, and to the center of your forehead.

As I mentioned earlier, it will help if you think of strobing as reverse contouring, but in the end, do what feels best for you, feel free to apply it wherever you like to shine as bright as you want!

I have been working with this technique and I really like how easy it is and how much flexibility I can have to achieve my desired "glow".  What do you think of strobing? Share your thoughts and highlighting tips on my Facebook and Twitter. Feel free to post your results too!
