How To Take Care Of Oily Skin

Oily skin results from overactive oil-producing sebaceous glands that produce more oil than required. Therefore, the oil oozes and makes the skin greasy, coarse and shiny. Very oily skin has a tendency to have coarse pimples, pores and other blemishes that can be embarrassing. Additionally, it is more susceptible to blackheads. Ewwww! I hate blackheads! If you’re oily skin is getting in the way of your perfect selfie; here are some tips that can help.

These tips and some recommended products will help you regain control of your skin. The end results will be smaller pores, fewer breakouts and less oil = fewer blackheads … YAY!

Keep Your  Skin Clean

Oily skin requires special care such as cleansing daily to prevent the pores from clogging. Use oil based products that dissolve sebum effectively and oil free moisturizers for a shiny free look. However, you should limit washing the face to twice a day since too much washing triggers the skin to produce more oil. When washing, massage the skin with fingertips using upward and outward motion. Though it may be tempting to use the strongest products to wash the oil away, avoid harsh creams, cleansers and soaps that contain artificial additives. I usually recommend a cleansing brush to boost your clean by 85% with a cleanser and moisturizer suitable for sensitive skin.

Use Oil Free Cosmetic Products

After cleansing, use natural oil-free skin products to keep the skin supple. Mineral based cosmetics and powders are recommended for oily skin. Go for water-based and oil free products that are non-comedogenic. This means that they do not cause black spots or block skin pores. Always remove makeup with makeup remover and proper cleansing before going to bed.

The Oily Skin Diet

Did you know that your diet can trigger production of excess skin oil? The first step should be to reduce the amount of fat in your diet and drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and keep skin properly hydrated. Eat a lot of vegetables, proteins and fresh fruits. A deficiency of Vitamin B2 can also cause oily skin. Therefore, consume natural sources of Vitamin B2 such as; royal jelly, wheat germ, beans, nutritional yeast, whole grains and nuts.

Exfoliate Weekly

Oily skin contains an extra layer of dead skin that builds up and a thick pore lining. These problems can be addressed through exfoliation which also makes the skin smoother. Try using products that contain salicylic acid; which is the best exfoliation ingredient. Salicylic acid exfoliates the outside and inside to boost pore function and easy oil flow to the skin surface. In some cases salicylic acid may be over drying on your skin. If this happens you can choose to use botanicals mask safe for sensitive skin and not as drying. You should only exfoliate/mask 1-2 times per week.

Oily skin not only makes your face greasy and unattractive, it can also cause other skin related problems like acne. Understanding your skin type is an important part of taking care of your skin and taking the right precautions to prevent skin further complications as a result from very oily skin.  At least there is one good benefit to your oily skin … it wrinkles less and ages slowly.
